A sampling of shop work fabrications and installations I have been part of while working on my own, as Sain Works as well as a few examples from my years of working in the shop with Rockhill and Associates.

Sain Works was hired to design, fabricate and assemble the Murphy Carport in Old West Lawrence. It presented many unique challenges being in a historic district and being inserted into a beautifully landscaped yard. The carport is a minimal insertion into the existing conditions altering the retaining wall, plantings and the existing slab as little as possible while still making an architectural statement and solving the needs of the client.

Friends of the Kaw hired Sain Works to design and fabricate the first kayak and canoe locker on the Kansas River – a 173 mile long designated National Water Trail. It is a prototype for what FOK hopes will be several lockers along the trail that will allow people to enjoy the towns as well as the river while paddling. A paddler can lock up their boat and gear while taking the short walk to town and enjoying the amenities offers.

Sain Works Outdoor Furniture. Two benches and two tables with an upper and lower top. They are made of smooth cedar 2×6’s and steel that has been galvanized. The galvanized steel will last outside for decades and the cedar for a very long time. The cedar boards can be replaced easily in the future if needed.

The benches are 18 ½ inches high 6 foot long and 14 inches wide. The square table is 34” tall and the tabletops are 15 x 18 inches. The table with the triangular leg is 32 ½” tall and the upper tabletop is 15 x 18 inches and lower one 13 x 15 inches.

After the success of the gusset table below I made 2 sets of multi-use tables that are similar. The larger table is 41″ tall and the top is 15″ x 22″. The lower shelf is 11″ x 14″. The smaller table is 19″ tall with a 15″ x 22″ top. Both have adjustable feet for leveling. They are welded steel that has been painted black with an exterior grade paint and concrete that I formed in the shop. For information about buying one or both go the the for sale page.

This multiuse indoor/outdoor table was made during a couple of quiet days at the boathouse shop. It was an improvisational effort using an old gusset found in the Kansas River during an Friends of the Kaw river cleanup and some found items that seem to be from some sort of utility structure. They were used to secure the gusset since I was not sure about its weldability and to make adjustable feet that allow for the table to be leveled. Everything else was made with scrap steel and bagged concrete. It is 40″ tall. The upper concrete slab is 15″ x 24″. The lower shelf is about 10″x12″ and about 1′ high. The steel is painted black.
